چکیده

This paper presents the acceleration sensitivity and the resulting vibration-induced phase noise of an electrostatically coupled encapsulated silicon microresonator. External vibrations can produce phase noise in microresonators by generating time-varying stress in the resonant beams. A spring mounted resonator design that reduces the induced axial stress is presented here. Measurements and simulations show that the acceleration sensitivity and the vibrationinduced phase noise of this device can be reduced 1000 times smaller than that of the previously published silicon microresonator and 10 times smaller than the commercially used high end SC stress compensated -cut quartz resonator. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Vertical integration of high-Q silicon nitride microresonators into silicon-on-insulator platform.

We demonstrate a vertical integration of high-Q silicon nitride microresonators into the silicon-on-insulator platform for applications at the telecommunication wavelengths. Low-loss silicon nitride films with a thickness of 400 nm are successfully grown, enabling compact silicon nitride microresonators with ultra-high intrinsic Qs (~ 6 × 10(6) for 60 μm radius and ~ 2 × 10(7) for 240 μm radius...

Silicon Photonics Research in Hong Kong: Microresonator Devices and Optical Nonlinearities

In this review paper we showcase recent activities on silicon photonics science and technology research in Hong Kong regarding two important topical areas — microresonator devices and optical nonlinearities. Our work on silicon microresonator filters, switches and modulators have shown promise for the nascent development of on-chip optoelectronic signal processing systems, while our studies on ...

Dual-pumped degenerate Kerr oscillator in a silicon nitride microresonator.

We demonstrate a degenerate parametric oscillator in a silicon nitride microresonator. We use two frequency-detuned pump waves to perform parametric four-wave mixing and operate in the normal group-velocity dispersion regime to produce signal and idler fields that are frequency degenerate. Our theoretical modeling shows that this regime enables generation of bimodal phase states, analogous to t...

Counter-rotating cavity solitons in a silicon nitride microresonator.

We demonstrate the generation of counter-rotating cavity solitons in a silicon nitride microresonator using a fixed, single-frequency laser. We demonstrate a dual three-soliton state with a difference in the repetition rates of the soliton trains that can be tuned by varying the ratio of pump powers in the two directions. Such a system enables a highly compact, tunable dual comb source that can...

Observation of correlation between route to formation, coherence, noise, and communication performance of Kerr combs.

Microresonator optical frequency combs based on cascaded four-wave mixing are potentially attractive as a multi-wavelength source for on-chip optical communications. In this paper we compare time domain coherence, radio-frequency (RF) intensity noise, and individual line optical communications performance for combs generated from two different silicon nitride microresonators. The comb generated...
